Kisaran is the capital of Asahan Regency in North Sumatra, in the lowlands between the mountains and the Strait of Malacca. From above, the town is compact. Its dense streets are grouped around a central area and main roads, and the built-up area thins quickly toward the edges.
Beyond the town, the land is dominated by plantations, mostly oil palm and rubber. On a map these areas look very different from the town. They have large, regular blocks, long straight access roads and very few buildings. The contrast between the dense centre and the wide estates around it is the main feature of the map.
