Kishtwār is a town in Jammu and Kashmir, on a raised plateau above the Chenab river, deep in the mountains. On the map the town is a small cluster of streets on relatively flat ground, with the land dropping away sharply to the river valleys around it.
The Chenab and its tributaries define the region. Roads follow the gorges, hug the valley sides and bend repeatedly to keep a workable gradient. The district is known for its saffron, grown on the plateau, and for Kishtwar National Park in the high mountains to the east.
