Kitzingen lies on the Main river in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, a short distance south-east of Würzburg. The river runs through the town from south to north, dividing it into two banks connected by several bridges. On the map, the Main is a broad, smooth line, with the older town concentrated on the western side and later districts spreading along both shores.
The historic centre forms a compact cluster of irregular streets near the river, with traces of former fortifications and gates visible in its outline. A Kitzingen map poster shows this core alongside larger residential areas, industrial zones and the wide tracts of land once used by the US Army, set within a landscape of fields and vineyards.
