Kondagaon is the headquarters of Kondagaon district in the Bastar region of southern Chhattisgarh. The town has grown along the main highway between Raipur and Jagdalpur. Its map shows a long commercial spine with residential lanes branching off on both sides. Past the built-up area the land turns quickly to fields, sal forest and small villages.
Kondagaon is a well-known centre of Bastar metal craft. The best known is dhokra, the lost-wax casting of brass and bell metal, alongside wrought iron work. Artisans in and around the town make figures, lamps and animals that sell across India, and the craft has made Kondagaon's name familiar far beyond Chhattisgarh.
