Kontagora is in Niger State in west-central Nigeria, on open savanna. From above, the town is a dense centre where several main roads meet, surrounded by residential areas that become looser and more irregular further out. Farmland and scattered settlements extend beyond the town in every direction.
Kontagora is the seat of the Kontagora Emirate, founded in the nineteenth century, and the emir's palace is still an important part of town life. It is also a trading and market town for the surrounding area, placed on roads linking different parts of northern Nigeria. The mix of older, tightly built areas and newer, more spread-out districts is visible on the map.
