Kontiolahti lies in North Karelia in eastern Finland, just north of the regional centre of Joensuu. Like much of the Finnish lakeland, it is more forest and water than town. On a map the main settlements appear as small clusters along roads and shores, separated by broad areas of woodland and irregular lakes.
The municipality is known across the winter sports world for its biathlon stadium, which has hosted World Cup races and the World Championships. The area's forests also carry long networks of ski and hiking trails, and its many lakes shape how roads and villages are laid out.
