Korostyshiv lies in Zhytomyr Oblast on the Teteriv River, beside the main highway between Kyiv and Zhytomyr and much closer to the latter. The river is the strongest element on the map: it loops through the town in a series of bends, with streets fanning out on both banks and bridges stitching the two sides together. Ponds and wooded areas soften the edges.
The area is known for granite. Quarries around the town have supplied stone for generations, and outcrops of rock along the Teteriv give the riverbanks a rugged character that is rare in the flatter parts of Ukraine. On a map these show as irregular clearings and water-filled pits, adding unexpected detail to the outskirts.
