Krasnoufimsk is in the southwest of Sverdlovsk Oblast, on the Ufa River in the foothills of the Ural Mountains. It was founded in 1736 as a fortress on this river. On a map, the river curves through the town, and the streets rise from its banks toward higher ground on either side.
The older part of town sits closest to the water, while newer districts spread farther up the slopes. A railway line passes through, linking Krasnoufimsk with Yekaterinburg and the rest of the Urals.
