Krian lies in Sidoarjo Regency, East Java, on the low, fertile delta plain of the Brantas River south-west of Surabaya. On a map the town is a dense centre around its main roads and railway station, with kampung lanes filling the spaces between and rice fields stretching out on every side.
The main railway line west from Surabaya passes through Krian, and the town has long served as a market centre for the surrounding villages. Irrigation channels and small rivers cross the land in straight and curving lines, a reminder that this delta has been farmed intensively for centuries and remains one of the most productive parts of Java.
