Kroměříž sits on the Morava River in the fertile Haná region of Moravia. From above, the historic town is a compact oval of streets around a large main square. The bulk of the Archbishop's Palace stands on one side, and its landscaped park runs along the river. The old core is small enough to take in at a glance, which makes its details easy to read.
A short walk away, the Flower Garden is one of the most graphic shapes on any Czech town map: a strictly geometric baroque garden with symmetrical beds, straight alleys and a long colonnade. Around these set pieces the town grows outward in quieter residential streets and working districts, with fields close at hand. The palace and both gardens were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998 as a well-preserved example of a European baroque princely residence. The town, sometimes called the Athens of Haná for its cultural life, also hosted the Imperial Diet of 1848–49, when the Austrian parliament moved here during the revolutionary period.
