Krosno lies in southeastern Poland, in the foothills leading up to the Beskid Niski. The old town sits on raised ground above the Wisłok river, and on the map its compact medieval layout stands out clearly: a nearly square market square with streets leading off at right angles, surrounded by later districts spreading along the valley.
Arcaded merchant houses line the market square, a legacy of the town's prosperity from trade in wine and cloth in earlier centuries. Just outside the core, the river and its tributaries shape the edges of the town, and the roads follow the valleys out toward the mountains to the south.
Krosno is best known today for glassmaking, and the region played an important part in the early history of the oil industry. A Krosno map poster shows that structure plainly: an ordered old town on its hill, the curving river below, and a town that has spread out along the valley floor.
