Krugersdorp lies on the West Rand, west of Johannesburg, and is part of Mogale City. The town was founded in 1887 during the Witwatersrand gold rush, and mining shaped its layout. From above, the older centre follows a regular grid, surrounded by suburbs stretching across the gentle ridges of the Highveld, with mine dumps and industrial areas along the east.
The monument at Paardekraal marks a gathering place from the nineteenth century, and the town's name honours Paul Kruger. To the north lies the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its fossil caves. Closer to town, the Krugersdorp Game Reserve preserves a large area of open veld right next to the suburbs.
