Ksar Hellal lies in the Monastir Governorate in the Sahel of eastern Tunisia, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean coast. From above, the town is a compact, dense settlement. Its old centre is a tight maze of narrow lanes, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward in straighter blocks along the roads to Moknine, Monastir and the coast.
The surrounding land is covered in olive groves, planted in the regular rows typical of the Sahel, which give the countryside a finely dotted texture on the map. The town has long been known for textile making and weaving, an industry that still shapes its economy.
Ksar Hellal holds an important place in modern Tunisian history: in 1934 it hosted the congress where the Neo-Destour party was founded, a key step toward independence. A Ksar Hellal map poster shows the dense old town, the roads leading out and the olive country all around.
