Kuala Ketil lies in the interior of Kedah, away from the coast and the rice plains of the north-west. The name describes the setting: kuala is the Malay word for the place where a river meets another river or the sea, and the town grew up beside the Ketil. From above, the built area is modest, a short run of main road and side streets with much larger areas of green around it.
Plantations dominate the surrounding landscape, and on a map they appear as a web of estate roads, some straight and some following the low hills. Kampung settlements stretch out along these routes instead of forming blocks, so the pattern is loose and linear. The river winds through it all, its bends forming a natural, irregular spine for the composition.
This is not a place with a famous skyline or a grand plan, and its map doesn't pretend otherwise.
