Kuala Kurau lies in the Kerian district of Perak, where the Kurau River meets the Strait of Malacca. The name means the mouth of the Kurau, and the map shows it directly: the river curls toward the coast, and the town's lanes cluster on its banks close to where it opens to the sea.
Fishing has long shaped the place. Houses and jetties extend toward the water along the riverbanks, and boats moor along the estuary. Inland, the landscape changes to the flat, irrigated rice fields of Kerian, one of Malaysia's traditional rice-growing areas, divided into long regular plots and channels.
