Kumarapalayam lies on the western side of Namakkal district in Tamil Nadu, on the bank of the Kaveri. Across the river stands the town of Bhavani, and the two are linked by a bridge, so on a map they read almost as a single settlement divided by water. The town's streets spread back from the river across mostly level ground.
Kumarapalayam is known in the region for handloom and powerloom weaving, and textile work shapes much of the local economy. The river, which supports farming along its banks, is the town's most important natural feature, and the main road crossing the Kaveri connects it with Erode and the wider western Tamil Nadu textile belt.
