Künzell is a municipality in Hesse that directly borders the city of Fulda to the east. It consists of several districts, some suburban and some still village-like, which together form a loose, extended settlement on the map. The streets near Fulda are denser, while those further east become more spaced out, with fields and woods between them.
The land rises gently toward the east, where the hills of the Rhön begin. Small streams run down toward the Fulda valley, and roads follow the terrain in soft curves. Farmland, orchards and patches of forest fill the spaces between the districts.
A Künzell map poster shows the transition between a city's edge and the countryside. The municipality also includes Loheland, a settlement founded in the early twentieth century as a school for gymnastics, crafts and education, which still sits among the fields as a distinct, carefully arranged cluster of buildings.
