Kyzyl-Kyya lies in Batken Region in southern Kyrgyzstan, on the edge of the Fergana Valley close to the border with Uzbekistan. In Kyrgyz the name means red rock, after the coloured cliffs of the surrounding foothills. On the map, the town forms a compact grid on sloping ground, with hills rising to the south and irrigated farmland opening to the north.
The town grew in the twentieth century around its coal mines, and its layout shows that Soviet-era origin. Straight, evenly spaced streets, wide avenues and blocks of housing are arranged with a planner's clarity. Mine sites, rail sidings and workings on the outskirts still mark the edges of the map.
What makes the Kyzyl-Kyya map poster striking is the meeting of order and terrain. The regular grid of the town runs up against folded hills and dry riverbeds that come down from the mountains. Around it, the looser pattern of villages and orchards spreads across the valley floor on every side.

Rising ground and dry gullies to the south break the grid into irregular edges and give the composition a natural, textured frame.
Valley farmland
To the north, irrigation canals and field boundaries of the Fergana Valley create a fine mesh of lines that fades gently toward the edge of the sheet.
