La Breita is in the Piura region, in the arid north-west of Peru, where the coastal desert stretches between the Pacific and the foothills of the Andes. From above, the settlement stands out clearly against the pale, open ground. A modest grid of streets forms its core, and the edges fade into sand, scrub and dry land.
In this part of Peru, the landscape is shaped by dry ravines, known locally as quebradas, which are usually empty but can carry water in unusually wet years. On a map, they appear as branching lines across the desert, the only natural features that break up the wide, flat terrain around the settlement.
