Laguna Map Poster & Print
Laguna is on the southern coast of Santa Catarina, on a peninsula between a large coastal lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. On the map, water surrounds much of the town. The lagoon lies to the west, the ocean beaches to the east, and hills separate the historic centre from the newer districts along the shore.
This is one of the oldest towns in southern Brazil. It is often said to mark the southern end of the Tordesillas line, which once divided Spanish and Portuguese claims. In 1839 it was the capital of the short-lived Juliana Republic, and Anita Garibaldi was born in the area. Laguna is also known for fishermen who work alongside dolphins in the lagoon channel.

A narrow channel connects the lagoon to the ocean. This is where fishermen and dolphins famously work together, and it appears as a clear break in the coastline.

On the Atlantic side, a long, straight beach is backed by a regular grid of newer streets. It contrasts with the irregular historic core.
