Lakshmeshwar lies in the Gadag district of northern Karnataka, on the flat, dark-soiled plain of the Deccan. It is one of the older towns in the region, with a history reaching back to the Chalukya period. Its temple complex dedicated to Someshwara and its Jain basadis are important monuments, and the town is known for its large number of historic inscriptions.
