Seen from above, Lalitpur sits at the southern tip of Uttar Pradesh, where a narrow part of the state reaches down into Bundelkhand. The town is compact: a knot of lanes and market streets, with the railway line along one side and roads running out to villages in every direction. Past the last houses, the map turns to open plateau, field boundaries and the curving edges of reservoirs.
The surrounding district is shaped by water held back by dams on the Betwa and its tributaries, and those long, irregular lakes show up clearly in black and white. To the south-west lies Deogarh, where a Gupta-period temple to Vishnu is among the earliest surviving stone temples in northern India. The same rocky country is also known for its groups of old Jain temples.

Dams in the district have created long lakes with ragged, branching edges. In a single tone they give the outer map an organic shape, quite unlike the tight lanes of the centre.
Old market core
The oldest part of town is a tight cluster of narrow streets and small blocks. It is the darkest patch of the print, where houses, shops and temples stand closest together.
