Lamía is the capital of Phthiotis in Central Greece. It rises on the lower slopes of a hill crowned by a medieval castle, which stands on ancient foundations and overlooks the town. Below lies the broad Spercheios valley, and beyond it is the Malian Gulf. The pass of Thermopylae, famous for the battle of 480 BC, is only a short distance to the southeast.
On a map, Lamía combines a central core with irregular streets climbing towards the castle and a set of squares that act as the town's meeting points. Newer districts spread downhill onto flatter ground. Major roads to Athens and Thessaly pass nearby, linking the town to the national route network.
