Lancaster Map Poster & Print
Lancaster is one of the oldest inland cities in the United States. It was laid out in the 1730s on a regular grid, and that plan still holds together on the map. Two main streets cross at Penn Square, marked by the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and the rest of the city divides into even rectangular blocks around them.
The Conestoga River curves along the eastern and southern sides of the city in wide meanders. Beyond the city, the pattern changes to rolling farmland, the Pennsylvania Dutch country known for its Amish and Mennonite communities. Franklin & Marshall College occupies a green campus on the western side of the grid.
Lancaster served as the capital of the United States for a single day in 1777, when Congress met here while fleeing Philadelphia. Its Central Market is often described as the oldest continuously operating farmers' market in the country. A Lancaster map poster shows that heritage in a clear grid.
