Lansdale grew around the railway, and the map still shows it plainly. The tracks cut diagonally through the borough, and downtown gathers where Main Street crosses them near the station. Around this crossing sits a tight grid of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century blocks. Toward the borough line it gives way to looser suburban streets, and then the surrounding townships of Montgomery County take over.
The borough was incorporated in the nineteenth century as a stop on the North Pennsylvania Railroad. Trains still link it with Philadelphia on the regional rail network. Small streams rise nearby, including the upper reaches of the Wissahickon Creek. They add a few irregular green corridors to a town otherwise shaped by straight lines and the geometry of the rail line.
