Lauchhammer is a town in southern Brandenburg, in the Lusatia region, formed from several older settlements that grew together around industry. From above, the town has a loose, spread-out layout, with separate districts linked by roads and rail lines rather than one compact center. Forests and open land fill the spaces between them.
The area was shaped by lignite mining and heavy industry through the 20th century. Former open-pit mines have been flooded to form lakes, and on the map these appear as large, irregular shapes around the town. The Biotürme, former coking plant towers kept as an industrial monument, are one of Lauchhammer's best-known sights.
