Leverkusen lies on the east bank of the Rhine between Cologne and Düsseldorf. It is a young city formed from several towns and villages, and the map still shows that origin. Instead of a single historic core, there are several centres, including Wiesdorf, Opladen and Schlebusch, linked by main roads and separated by fields, woods and river valleys.
The city’s identity is tied to Bayer, whose headquarters and chemical park run along the Rhine at Wiesdorf. The illuminated Bayer cross is a well-known landmark. The company’s football club, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, won its first Bundesliga title in the 2023–24 season without losing a league match.
A Leverkusen map poster shows the industrial riverfront, the loops of the Wupper and Dhünn joining before they reach the Rhine, and the Leverkusener Kreuz, where the A1 and A3 motorways meet. Green spaces such as the Japanese Garden near the Bayer site add small, softer shapes.
