Livermore lies in the Livermore Valley in eastern Alameda County, California, separated from San Francisco Bay by ranges of hills. The city spreads across the flat valley floor. A compact grid forms the downtown, newer neighbourhoods extend outward, and Interstate 580 runs along the northern side toward the Altamont Pass.
The valley is one of California's oldest wine regions, and vineyards cover much of the land south of the city. Livermore is home to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a major scientific research centre. It also has the Centennial Light, a bulb in a local fire station that has been burning almost continuously since 1901.

Beyond the city the hills rise toward the Altamont, where wind turbines line the ridges, though on the map they are simply open, quiet land.
