Loa Janan lies in Kutai Kartanegara Regency, on the Mahakam River just upstream of Samarinda, the capital of East Kalimantan. The Mahakam is one of Borneo's great rivers, and here it is wide and busy with barges. The town's settlements line the water and the main road, so on a map it reads as a set of long strips rather than one compact centre.
Inland the landscape is hilly and patched with plantations, cleared land and remaining forest, and the area has long been associated with coal mining. Roads from Loa Janan lead south toward Balikpapan, linking the river valley to the coast. The pattern is looser than a city grid, with clusters of streets separated by open ground.
