Santa Cruz de Lorica lies in Colombia's Córdoba Department, on the Sinú River, a short distance before the river reaches the Caribbean. On a map, the Sinú is the dominant element: a broad, meandering band along which the old town was laid out. Streets run parallel to the bank, with others crossing toward the water.
Beyond the town, the land is flat and wet. To the east lies the large Ciénaga Grande de Lorica, a lagoon and marsh system that appears as a wide area of water and floodplain. Cattle pastures and rice fields fill the ground in between. A Lorica map poster shows the town's close ties to the river and the low wetland landscape.
Lorica was an important river port, and in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries many Syrian and Lebanese immigrants settled there as traders. Their influence remains in the republican-era buildings of the historic centre, including the riverside public market, and the old town is protected as national heritage.
