Losheim am See lies in the north of Saarland, in the Merzig-Wadern district, where the land rises toward the wooded Hunsrück and Hochwald. The municipality consists of a main village and several smaller settlements spread through the valleys. On the map, streets follow the contours of the hills, and forests fill much of the space between the villages.
The municipality's defining feature is the Losheimer Stausee, a reservoir lake that gave the place its full name and made it a popular destination for walking, swimming and relaxation in the region. The lake sits close to the main village, and paths and roads encircle its shores, drawing a distinct loop on the map.
