Luga Map Poster & Print
Luga lies about 140 kilometres south of Saint Petersburg, on the river that gives it its name. The town grew along the main road and railway toward Pskov, and on a map these routes still form its spine. The river winds through the centre in wide bends, dividing the town into parts linked by a handful of bridges.
The historic centre follows a fairly regular pattern of streets near the river, while outer districts spread along the roads into the pine forests that surround the town. Small lakes and wetlands scatter the landscape, giving the edges of the map a loose, organic texture typical of the Leningrad region.
Luga's name is also linked to the Luga defensive line of 1941, when fortifications along the river slowed the advance on Leningrad. A Luga map poster shows the quieter present-day shape of the place: river bends, straight railway lines and a town set within a wide ring of forest.
