Lutuhyne lies in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, southwest of the city of Luhansk, in the rolling steppe of the Donbas. On a map, the town shows the usual pattern of an industrial settlement from the region. Residential streets are laid out in rough blocks, and larger sites and transport lines border them.
The town has long been associated with heavy industry, and the railway plays a big part in its layout. Tracks run past the town and divide it into districts, and wide open fields surround everything. Small river valleys and ravines, typical of the steppe, cut shallow lines through the farmland.
