Macas, the capital of Morona Santiago, lies in Ecuador's eastern lowlands at the foot of the Andes. On the map the town is a tidy grid on a raised terrace. On one side, the Upano river spreads below in a wide, braided channel of gravel bars and shifting streams, and the land beyond is covered in forest and pasture.
On clear days the town has views of Sangay, one of Ecuador's most active volcanoes, rising to the west. The region is the traditional territory of the Shuar people, and Macas serves as the administrative and market centre for much of the surrounding province.
