Maliana is the capital of Bobonaro municipality in western Timor-Leste, close to the border with Indonesian West Timor. It lies on one of the country's larger areas of flat land, a valley plain surrounded by hills. On a map the town is a modest grid of streets, with irrigated fields and small villages spread out around it.
The plain around Maliana is among the more important rice-growing areas in Timor-Leste, and irrigation channels and field boundaries give the landscape a fine, patterned texture. The mountains that rise around the valley frame the town and separate it from the coast.
