Mangbwalu lies in Ituri province in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in a hilly upland area northwest of Bunia. The town is known as a centre of gold mining, part of a goldfield that has been worked for generations, and its layout reflects that history.
On the map, the town appears as a cluster of streets and settlements spread across hills and valleys, with roads following the slopes rather than a regular grid. Streams run through the lower ground, and the surrounding landscape is a mix of forest, cleared land and small villages linked by tracks.
