Man’gyŏngdae lies on the western side of Pyongyang, on the bank of the Taedong River as it flows toward the Yellow Sea. The area is shaped by low, wooded hills close to the water. From above, it shows a mix of broad planned avenues, large residential blocks and open green spaces rather than a tight historic street pattern.
In North Korea the district is best known as the birthplace of Kim Il Sung, and his childhood home is preserved as a memorial site on a hillside there. The area also has a large amusement park and a schoolchildren's palace. Wide roads link it back to the centre of the capital to the east.
