Marabá lies in southeastern Pará, where the Tocantins and Itacaiúnas rivers meet in the eastern part of the Brazilian Amazon. The rivers divide the city into several separate nuclei. On the map these districts appear as distinct clusters of streets, linked by bridges and highways, with wide water and green land between them.
The oldest part, Velha Marabá, sits on the tongue of land between the two rivers and is prone to seasonal flooding. In the 1970s a new district, Nova Marabá, was planned on higher ground. It is divided into units called folhas, or leaves, which give it an unusual branching street pattern quite different from an ordinary grid.
The city grew as a trading centre for Brazil nuts and later became an important hub for the Carajás mining region to the southwest, with the Trans-Amazonian Highway passing through.
