Marechal Thaumaturgo is one of the most remote municipalities in Brazil, in the far west of Acre near the border with Peru. The town sits on the banks of the Juruá River, and for most people the river and small aircraft are the only practical ways to arrive. It is named after Marshal Gregório Thaumaturgo de Azevedo, a figure in the early administration of Acre.
From above the town is a compact set of streets beside the river, while the Juruá loops through the forest in wide meanders. In this part of Amazonia, oxbow lakes and abandoned channels show where rivers have shifted over time. Beyond the last streets there is almost nothing but forest, so the map balances a tiny built area against a vast, open surround.
The municipality includes part of the Alto Juruá Extractive Reserve, created to protect the rubber tappers and forest communities of the region, and Indigenous territories lie nearby.
