Mari is a municipality in the state of Paraíba, in north-eastern Brazil, in the humid agricultural belt west of the coast around João Pessoa. The town is compact. A few principal streets carry most of the traffic, and around them are blocks of single-storey houses that fit the gentle rise and fall of the land.
From above, Mari appears as a clear urban cluster within a wide rural area. Fields and scattered vegetation surround it, and the roads out of town are the main lines linking it to neighbouring municipalities. There are no dramatic features here, just the familiar pattern of a Brazilian interior town, with the centre as the heart of daily life.
