Marshfield sits in central Wisconsin, on gentle, mostly level country surrounded by dairy farms. The map is classic Midwest: a regular street grid aligned with the compass points. Railway corridors cut through town at an angle, and a few main roads carry traffic out to the highways. The result is simple and orderly, and it reads clearly from any distance.
The city is best known for Marshfield Clinic, a medical and research organisation founded here that grew into one of the region's major health systems. The clinic and the hospital next to it form a noticeably larger cluster of buildings and parking within the grid. Once the map is drawn in black and white, that cluster stands out clearly.
At the edges, residential streets give way to long country roads and field boundaries. A Marshfield map poster captures that change well: dense rectangles at the centre, green space at Wildwood Park, then a thinning grid that fades into the long straight roads of rural central Wisconsin.
