Mascalucia Map Poster
Mascalucia lies on the southern slopes of Mount Etna, a short distance north of Catania in eastern Sicily. The ground rises steadily from the coast toward the volcano, and on a map the town appears as a dense web of streets that has grown along the roads climbing the mountain, merging with the neighbouring towns on either side.
Much of the area is built on old lava flows, and the volcanic soil has long supported vineyards, orchards and gardens. Over recent decades Mascalucia has grown as a residential town for people working in Catania, and the gaps between houses are often filled with green plots and walled gardens.
A Mascalucia map poster shows a place without straight grids. The roads bend and fork as they follow the slope, the old centre forms a tight cluster around its main square, and newer streets spread out in every direction. In black and white, the result looks almost like a fine drawing of branches.
