Massinga is in Inhambane Province in southern Mozambique, on the national highway that runs up the country's coast. The road is the backbone of its map. The town centre gathers along it, and from there local streets and sandy tracks reach out into the surrounding settlement. Market areas and public buildings cluster near the highway, while houses and small fields spread out loosely beyond.
The land here is low and sandy, and the Indian Ocean coast lies a short distance to the east. Between the town and the sea the map shows a patchwork of farmland, coconut palms and small lakes and wetlands scattered across the coastal plain. Paths link the homesteads in a web that is informal but still readable from above.
