Matara sits on the southern shore of Sri Lanka, where the Nilwala River bends toward the sea and meets the Indian Ocean. From above, the town is a band of streets squeezed between water on two sides. The coastal road and railway run roughly parallel to the shoreline before the town fans out into quieter residential lanes inland.
The old centre still shows traces of the Dutch period. There is a fortified quarter by the river mouth and a compact star fort a short walk away. Just offshore, a small island joined to the beach by a footbridge holds a Buddhist temple, one of the most recognisable shapes along this stretch of coast. Dondra Head, the island's southernmost point, lies a few kilometres east.

Near the river mouth, the former Dutch fort encloses a small, dense block of streets. The separate star fort nearby appears as a compact geometric outline on the map.
Island temple offshore
Parey Duwa, a rocky islet linked to the shore by a footbridge, sits just off the beach. It adds a small, distinctive detail to the smooth southern coastline.
