Mateare lies in Managua Department in Nicaragua, a short distance west of the capital along the southern shore of Lake Managua, also called Lake Xolotlán. The town runs in a narrow band between the lake and a range of hills to the south, and on a map this position gives it a long, linear shape following the shoreline and the road toward León.
The lake dominates the northern edge of any map of Mateare, a broad surface of water extending toward the volcanoes on the far side. Across the lake to the northwest rises the cone of Momotombo, one of Nicaragua's most recognisable volcanoes. Around the town, small farms and scattered settlements fill the slopes, connected by rural roads.
