Mateus Leme is a municipality in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, west of the state capital in central Minas Gerais. The terrain is hilly, as is typical of the region. From above, the town is a web of curving streets that follow the slopes, with a denser core in the valley and newer neighbourhoods climbing the surrounding hills.
Its position within reach of the capital shows clearly on the map. Residential districts and main roads tie the town to the metropolitan area, while farms, pasture and patches of woodland fill the countryside beyond the built-up edge. Town and country meet within a short distance.
