Mau lies in Bhind district in the north of Madhya Pradesh, in the flat farming country of the Chambal region. From above it looks like a dense cluster rather than a grid. Short lanes, uneven blocks and closely built houses pack around the older core, and fields press in on every side. The town is small, and the map shows that plainly: one knot of streets in a wide, open landscape.
The strongest lines on the sheet are the roads. They come in from neighbouring towns and villages, run fairly straight across the fields and then narrow and bend as they reach the built-up area. Where they meet, the pattern thickens into the commercial streets that serve the surrounding countryside. Beyond the last houses the farmland takes over, drawn as a fine, faint texture of field edges and tracks.
