Maur, often called Maur Mandi, lies in Bathinda district in the Malwa region of Punjab. The land around it is completely flat and intensively farmed. From above, Maur is a compact town surrounded by a vast, regular grid of fields, crossed by irrigation canals and straight rural roads.
As its name suggests, the town is a mandi, a grain market, and its layout reflects that role. There are commercial streets and market yards, a railway line and roads that bring in wheat and cotton from the surrounding villages. On the map, the dense town centre stands out sharply against the even rhythm of the farmland.
