Maykop Map Poster & Print
Maykop, the capital of the Republic of Adygea, sits on the Belaya River at the edge of the North Caucasus foothills. The city began as a Russian fortress in 1857, and its centre still shows that planned start. Its straight streets form a regular grid, and wide, tree-lined avenues run through the middle.
The Belaya runs along the city's western side in a broad, wooded valley. On the map, its winding channel, islands and green banks contrast with the straight grid. South of the city, the land rises toward the mountains. Roads follow the river valley upstream toward gorges and the high Lago-Naki plateau.
The name Maykop is also known in archaeology. A Bronze Age burial mound excavated here gave its name to the Maykop culture, one of the early cultures of the Caucasus. A Maykop map poster shows a calm grid city with the river on one side and the mountains beginning to the south.
