Mazatenango is built on the gently sloping Pacific lowlands of south-western Guatemala. Its streets follow the grid common to Spanish colonial towns, organised around a central park. On the map, the regular blocks give way to looser neighbourhoods and plantations at the edges. The land rises toward the volcanic highlands to the north.
The town is the capital of Suchitepéquez department and a commercial centre for a region of sugar cane, coffee and other crops. It is best known for its carnival, one of the largest and oldest in Guatemala, with parades and celebrations that draw visitors from across the country.
